Most of the calls we get about damaged turf assume something is wrong with the installation — a seam coming apart, infill washing out, fibers going flat. Heat damage is different. It's not a defect and it's not wear; it's a burn, and it behaves like one. Once polyethylene fibers melt, they fuse and shrink permanently. Nothing you do afterward — grooming, rinsing, letting it "cool off and recover" — brings them back. The only real question once it's happened is whether the damage is small enough to patch or big enough to warrant cutting out and replacing a section.
Most residential and landscape turf is made from polyethylene fiber, which is soft and grass-like but has a comparatively low heat tolerance. It starts to soften around 175-200°F and fully melts in the 250-320°F range. Some sport-specific or premium products use nylon fiber instead, which is far more heat-resistant and doesn't melt until roughly 450-500°F — worth knowing if you're specifying material for an area near a fire feature.

The numbers in that last row surprise most people: turf doesn't need to catch fire or be touched by an open flame to be ruined. Radiant heat from a grill sitting a few feet away, with nothing ever landing on the turf itself, is a common enough cause that most manufacturers put a minimum clearance distance in their installation literature.
It's not always an obvious black scorch mark. A slow reflected-heat melt often looks like a discolored, slightly shiny or crinkled patch that people assume is UV fading or a bad batch of fiber — worth ruling out against our guide to turf fading and UV protection before you treat it as a heat problem. A grill or fire pit burn is more distinct: fibers fuse together into a stiff, matted clump instead of standing up individually, sometimes with visible discoloration ranging from yellow to brown to black depending on how hot it got. Run a hand across a suspected spot — melted fiber feels crunchy and brittle instead of soft, and it won't fluff back up with brushing the way matted-but-undamaged turf will.

Get a QuoteSize and location drive the call more than severity. A quarter-sized ember burn in the middle of a lawn is an easy patch. The same size burn sitting right on a seam line, or a scattering of five or six smaller burns spread across a patio border, usually isn't worth patching individually — cutting one clean section and replacing it looks better and holds up longer than a field of small patches. As a rough guide: isolated damage under roughly a square foot, away from a seam, patches cleanly. Damage that's larger, that clusters, or that sits on or near a seam is a replace-the-section job.

The window-reflection case is the one most people never think to check until it's already happened, because there's no obvious flame or heat source to blame. If a patch of turf is discoloring in the same spot every sunny afternoon and there's a window or glass door with a direct line of sight to it, that's worth investigating before assuming it's a product defect.
