Anyone who's managed a turf field for more than a season has dealt with blood on it — a busted lip on the sideline, a slide tackle gone wrong, a nosebleed during a August practice. It's routine enough that most facilities have a process for it without ever writing one down. The problem is the instinct most people reach for first — hot water, a stiff scrub, maybe some bleach if it's stubborn — is exactly backwards for how blood actually behaves on synthetic fiber, and it's why some fields end up with a stain that never quite fully disappears even after multiple attempts.
Blood is a protein-based stain, closer in chemistry to an egg white spill than to dirt, rust, or oil. Heat causes protein to coagulate — it's the same reaction that turns a raw egg white opaque and solid when it hits a hot pan. Apply hot water to a blood stain and you get a smaller-scale version of that same reaction: the proteins bond more tightly to the turf fiber instead of releasing from it. Cold water keeps those proteins soluble, which is why it has to be the first move, not an afterthought.
This is different from most of what shows up in our other stain guides. Oil and grease need a degreasing agent because they're not water-soluble at all. Rust needs a mild acid to break the iron-oxide bond. Blood needs cold water and an enzyme that specifically targets protein — using the wrong approach for the wrong stain type is the single biggest reason turf stains turn into permanent marks.
A stain that's had hours or days to dry needs more patience, not more force. Soak the area with cold water and enzyme cleaner and let it dwell for 30 to 60 minutes, agitating gently with a brush every 10 minutes or so rather than scrubbing hard in one pass. Older stains that have worked their way into the infill layer, not just the fiber surface, often need two or three treatment cycles spread over a couple of days rather than one long session.
Diluted hydrogen peroxide is a reasonable next step for a stain that won't fully lift with enzyme treatment alone — it breaks down organic staining more aggressively than an enzyme cleaner. Test it on an inconspicuous patch first, though, since peroxide is a mild bleaching agent and can leave turf fiber or infill slightly lighter than the surrounding area if it's used heavily or repeatedly on the same spot.
Lifting the visible color doesn't mean the spot is safe to play on. Blood can carry bloodborne pathogens, and turf's fiber-and-infill structure holds onto them in exactly the way our bacteria testing guide describes. Skipping straight from "looks clean" to "back in play" is the most common shortcut we see facilities take, and it's the wrong one.
Who handles it matters too. Gloves are non-negotiable, and a large spill shouldn't be left to an untrained volunteer with a bucket.
